SPOTTED TREE MONITOR
Varanus scalaris
Northern Australia (Northern Territory, Western Australia, Queensland) - To be confirmed

and

Varanus similis (was Varanus scalaris similis) (Status uncertain)
Australia (North Territory and Queensland), New Guinea

There seems to be some confusion about these 2 species in Australia. The name Varanus similis appears to have been recently resurrected in 2013 the Type locality is “Groote Eylandt, NT” -

In Australia however this recent article (2015) in the Australian Journal of Zoology about DNA sequences refers to "V. scalaris similis" (from NT Australia) as well as "V scalaris scalaris" whereas "Distribution, Threats, and Conservation Status of the Monitor Lizards" (2013) refers to 'Varanus similis" (from NT Australia )

Note that the map above appears to be incorrect - I will be updating it once I have some reliable information

This specimen is from Humpty Doo, NT.
