This section is focused mainly on State and Territory Government sites responsible for protection of reptiles and permit system within their state. Note that each State has its own laws, although each states laws may make sense when looked at individually, looking at all the states is very confusing. Tasmania appears to have no permit system or protected reptiles but does not allow reptiles to be brought into that state. Western Australia has a permit system, but only allows people to keep reptiles native to the State, South Australia has a strongly regulated system however permits can be obtained to keep almost any species if you have the ability to keep it properly. Some states have some "exempt" species, this usually means that they can be kept and possibly sold without a permit within that state - it does not mean that the animal can be caught from the wild. The ability to get Permits to remove animals from the wild varies greatly from state to state. Penalties for illegal activities may be severe in some cases.
